Designing & facilitating conversations that lead to action.

I work with people to find common ground when it matters most.

I’m an independent facilitator working on forests, wildfire, and conservation on public and private lands. For more than 20 years I’ve worked from rural communities across the West to national policy tables. I bring both the process skills and the subject matter knowledge into the room.

Whether you’re convening 500 people around a national agenda or getting a board through a hard decision, I help groups reach agreements they can stand behind.

Most of my work comes from clients who hire me again.

Areas of Expertise

Facilitation

I design and lead meetings that go somewhere. That means an agenda built around the decision you actually need, and conversations that are authentic when the room gets difficult. I’ve run multi-day summits with hundreds of participants and workshops series that lasted a year.

Collaboration & Partnerships

I’ve led collaboratives on the ground in the rural West and served on national advisory committees. That work taught me how these groups form, and where they stall out. The harder question is what carries a partnership from shared vision to implementation, especially across boundaries and ownerships.

Strategy & Analysis

Twenty years working for and with the Forest Service, BLM, state forestry agencies, and local and national conservation organizations means I know the policy landscape and the people in it. Recent work includes a wildfire policy roadmap, an analysis of prescribed fire liability insurance, and a Ponderosa Pine Action Plan.

“Karen helped guide the Tongass Advisory Committee to consensus on a seemingly intractable controversy that had plagued the nation’s largest National Forest for decades. The Committee owed much of its success to the deep knowledge she brought to the table and her ability to win the trust and confidence of every committee member.”

– Connie Lewis, Senior Fellow, Meridian Institute, and lead facilitator for the Tongass Advisory Committee
